The Human Weighted Blanket
The morning light in Munich was unforgiving, filtering through the gaps in the heavy velvet curtains and illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Mimi tried to shift her left shoulder, but it was a lost cause. She was pinned, utterly and completely, by several kilograms of elite athlete.
Jamal Musiala was a magician on the pitch—lithe, agile, and capable of slipping through the tightest defenses in the Bundesliga. But in sleep, he was a different creature entirely. He was a sprawling, heavy, heat-radiating octopus.
His face was buried deep in the crook of her neck, his warm breath tickling her skin in a rhythmic pattern that would have been soothing if she weren't currently losing circulation in her arm. One of his long, powerful legs was hooked firmly over both of hers, anchoring her to the mattress. His arms were wrapped around her waist with a strength that spoke of subconscious possessiveness, his fingers curled into the fabric of her oversized t-shirt.
Mimi, who was petite by any standard, felt like a doll caught in the grip of a very peaceful bear. Her curly brown hair was a wild halo across the pillow, tangled with his dark curls where their heads rested together.
"Jamal," she whispered, her voice raspy with sleep. "Bambi, I need to breathe."
A soft grunt was her only answer. He nuzzled closer, his nose pressing into the soft skin just below her ear. He smelled like expensive detergent and the faint, lingering scent of the mint tea he’d had before bed.
She let out a tiny huff of a laugh, her heart melting despite the physical discomfort. It was a side of him the world never saw. The public saw the starboy, the focused professional, the shy interviewee. They didn't see the man who turned into a literal human weighted blanket the moment his eyes closed.
Carefully, using her one free hand, Mimi reached for her phone on the nightstand. It took three attempts of blind fluttering before her fingers closed around the device. She brought it back under the covers, angling the camera upward.
The screen illuminated her face, highlighting her wide brown eyes and the way Jamal was practically draped over her like a heavy cloak. In the frame, she looked tiny—swallowed up by his limbs and the sheer scale of him compared to her petite frame. She snapped a few photos, the shutter sound muffled by the duvet.
One photo was perfect. It captured the peaceful, almost vulnerable expression on Jamal’s face as he hid from the world against her shoulder, while Mimi looked into the lens with a mixture of adoration and "help me" written across her features.
"Wake up, sleepyhead," she murmured, brushing her fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck.
Jamal stirred, a low groan vibrating against her skin. He slowly untangled himself, his movements sluggish and reluctant. He blinked his eyes open, the dark irises hazy with the remnants of dreams.
"Morning," he mumbled, his voice an octave deeper than usual. He didn't move away, instead resting his forehead against hers. "What time is it?"
"Time for you to realize you’re a menace to my personal space," Mimi joked, finally regaining feeling in her left arm. She sat up, rubbing her shoulder. "You were doing it again."
Jamal pushed himself up on one elbow, looking genuinely confused. "Doing what?"
"Squishing me. You sleep like you’re afraid I’m going to float away if you don't hold me down with every limb you possess."
He let out a soft, embarrassed chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. "I don't do that. I stay on my side. Mostly."
"Mostly?" Mimi eyebrows shot up. "Jamal, you were essentially using me as a mattress topper. Look."
She swiped through her phone and handed it to him. Jamal took the device, his eyes widening as he scrolled through the photos she had just taken. A flush of red crept up his neck, reaching the tips of his ears.
"Is that... is that really how I sleep?" he asked, his voice full of disbelief. "I look like I’m trying to tackle you."
"You look like a giant koala," she corrected, leaning in to kiss his cheek. "It’s cute. But I’m pretty sure I’ve grown an inch shorter because of the spinal compression."
"I’m sorry," he said, though he was smiling now, his eyes fixed on the photo of him buried in her neck. "I just... I feel better when I’m close to you. I didn't realize it was that extreme."
"It’s okay. I like it," she admitted, tucking a stray curl behind her ear. "But you looked so peaceful. I kind of want to post this. Can I?"
Jamal hesitated, his professional instincts warring with the warmth in his chest. He was private by nature, but there was something so domestic and real about the photo. It wasn't a staged influencer shot; it was just them.
"The one where my face is hidden?" he asked.
"Yeah. Just the 'clinging for dear life' vibe."
He shrugged, a playful glint in his eyes. "Go for it. But don't be surprised if the guys at the club never let me hear the end of it. Thomas is going to have a field day."
Mimi didn't wait. She opened Instagram, typed a quick caption—Found the reason for my back pain. 10/10 would not recommend as a pillow, but 100/10 for the cuddles.—and hit share.
By the time they had made it to the kitchen and the coffee machine had finished its first cycle, Mimi’s phone was vibrating incessantly on the marble countertop.
"Oh no," she whispered, picking it up.
"What?" Jamal asked, pouring milk into his mug.
"It’s... it’s going everywhere."
She turned the screen toward him. In less than twenty minutes, the post had racked up hundreds of thousands of likes. The comments were a flood of laughing emojis and "awws." But more than that, the internet had already done what the internet does best.
Someone had already cropped the photo and turned it into a meme. The caption read: Me holding onto my weekend like...
Another one appeared seconds later: Musiala defending his lead vs. Musiala defending his girlfriend’s personal space.
"I’m a meme," Jamal said, staring at the screen. He sounded somewhere between horrified and amused.
"You’re a viral meme," Mimi corrected, scrolling further. "Look at this one. It’s a side-by-side of you shielding the ball against three defenders and then you shielding me from the cold air in the bedroom."
Jamal sat down at the breakfast table, burying his face in his hands as he laughed. "I can never go back to training. Leroy is going to print this out and tape it to my locker. I know he is."
"At least everyone knows you’re a sweetheart," Mimi said, walking over to stand between his knees. She ran her hands through his hair, tilting his head back so he had to look at her. "Even if you are a very heavy sweetheart."
"Is it really that bad?" he asked, his arms automatically finding their way around her waist again, pulling her close.
"The sleeping? Yes. You’re like a backpack that weighs eighty kilos."
"But you said you liked it."
"I do," she whispered, leaning down to press a soft kiss to his lips. "It makes me feel safe. Even if I can't move."
Jamal pulled her onto his lap, his grip tightening just like it had in the photo. "Well, get used to it. Because now that I know it’s viral, I have a reputation to uphold. The world expects me to be clingy now."
"I think I can live with that," Mimi smiled, resting her head against his chest.
Her phone buzzed again. It was a text from Alphonso Davies in the team group chat. It was a link to the post, followed by twenty 'skull' emojis and a message: Yo, Bambi, do you need us to call a search and rescue team for Mimi? She’s disappearing!
Jamal groaned, but he didn't let go. If anything, he pulled her even closer, his chin resting on the top of her head. The world could laugh all it wanted; he was exactly where he wanted to be, and for the first time, he didn't mind the whole world knowing it.
"You know," Jamal said after a moment of quiet, his voice vibrating against her. "If I’m going to be a meme for being clingy, I might as well do it properly."
"Oh? And what does 'properly' look like?" Mimi asked, tilting her head back to look at him.
"It means we stay right here for at least another hour. I have a reputation to protect, remember?"
Mimi laughed, the sound bright and clear in the quiet kitchen. "Fine. But if my legs fall asleep, you’re carrying me to the car later."
"Deal," Jamal whispered, his eyes softening as he looked at her.
He didn't care about the millions of views or the jokes his teammates would make at practice. In the small, quiet world of their apartment, he wasn't the Golden Boy of German football. He was just a man who loved a girl so much that even in his sleep, he couldn't bear to be an inch away from her.
As the sun rose higher over Munich, the "Human Weighted Blanket" meme continued to trend worldwide, but the man himself was far too busy being a literal one to notice. He held her tight, his heart beating a steady rhythm against hers, proving that some things—like the way he held her—were far better than any highlight reel.
