The Weight of a Golden Heart
The neon lights of the Madrid nightclub blurred into streaks of violet and gold, a dizzying celebration of another victory at the Bernabéu. Sergio, only twenty-two and still reeling from the adrenaline of his first month with the first team, felt like he was walking on air. He was a Real Madrid player. He was wearing the crest. And, most importantly, he was sharing a VIP booth with Luka Modrić.
He had spent the entire night watching Luka. It was impossible not to. The veteran midfielder was thirty-five, a legend of the game, yet he possessed a delicate, almost ethereal quality that contrasted sharply with the grit he showed on the pitch. He was small—tiny, really, compared to Sergio’s broad-shouldered frame—but he commanded the room with a quiet, effortless grace.
Sergio stepped away from the noise to find the restroom, his head spinning slightly from the champagne. He turned a corner into a dimly lit service hallway, away from the prying eyes of the public, and froze.
There, pressed against the cool stone wall, was Luka. He wasn't alone. A tall, dark-haired man had his hands resting on Luka’s waist, and Luka—the stoic, unreachable veteran—had his fingers tangled in the man’s hair, pulling him down for a deep, bruising kiss.
Sergio’s heart didn't just drop; it performed a violent somersault. He felt a hot flash of shock, followed immediately by a searing, irrational jealousy. He scrambled back before they could see him, his lungs suddenly too small for his chest.
Luka was gay. Or bisexual. Or something that meant there was a door left cracked open—a door Sergio had assumed was bolted shut by the sheer weight of Luka’s professional reputation.
The next morning at Valdebebas, Sergio couldn't keep his mouth shut. He waited until the locker room had cleared out, leaving only him and Luka, who was sitting on the bench peeling off his socks. Luka’s thighs were exposed, thick and corded with muscle, a testament to nearly two decades of elite athleticism. Sergio stared at them, his throat dry.
"I saw you last night," Sergio blurted out, his voice cracking like a teenager's.
Luka didn't look up, his blonde hair falling over his face as he unlaced his boots. "Did you? I hope you had fun, Sergio. It was a good win."
"No, I mean... I saw you in the hallway. With that guy."
Luka paused. He slowly straightened his back, his blue eyes meeting Sergio’s with a calm, terrifying clarity. A small, amused smirk played on his lips. "And?"
"And... I didn't know," Sergio stammered, stepping closer, his heart hammering against his ribs. "I just... I think I should have a chance. If you like men, I mean. I’m younger, I’m stronger, I could—"
Luka let out a sharp, melodic laugh that echoed against the metal lockers. He stood up, and even though he was significantly shorter than Sergio, he seemed to radiate a power that made the younger man feel small.
"You?" Luka reached out, patting Sergio’s cheek with a condescending affection. "You’re a baby, Sergio. You’ve been in Madrid for five minutes."
"I’m twenty-two! I’m a man," Sergio protested, his face flushing deep red.
"You’re a puppy," Luka corrected, his voice dropping to a teasing hum. "A loud, energetic puppy who doesn't know what to do with his own feet yet. Go home, kid. Sleep off the excitement."
Luka gathered his things and walked out, leaving Sergio vibrating with a mix of humiliation and desperate desire.
The weeks that followed were a slow descent into madness for Sergio. He became a shadow, a constant presence at Luka’s side. He would volunteer for every drill that involved the veteran. He would linger in the hallways just to catch a scent of Luka’s expensive, woody cologne.
He made a fool of himself constantly. He tried to act sophisticated, ordering espresso he hated because he saw Luka drinking it, only to choke and cough in front of the entire squad. He tried to talk about art and wine, failing miserably when Luka realized he couldn't name a single painter outside of Picasso.
But the physical proximity was what truly undid him.
During a rainy training session, Luka slipped on the slick grass. Sergio was there in a heartbeat, his large hands diving under Luka’s armpits to hoist him up. The ease with which he lifted the older man was intoxicating. Luka felt so light, so compact in his arms, his small frame fitting perfectly against Sergio’s chest.
"I’ve got you," Sergio whispered, his grip lingering a second too long. "I won't let you fall."
Luka looked up at him, raindrops clinging to his long lashes. He didn't pull away immediately. He just sighed, a weary but fond sound. "You’re very strong, puppy. Now let go before the coach thinks we’re dancing."
Sergio let go, but his hands burned where they had touched Luka’s ribs. Every time they hugged after a goal, Sergio felt the same rush. He could crush Luka if he wanted to. He could manhandle him, toss him over his shoulder, pin him down. The power dynamic on the pitch was reversed in Sergio’s head; Luka might be the master of the ball, but Sergio wanted to be the master of his body.
He became obsessed with Luka’s thighs. During tactical meetings, while the coach droned on about 4-3-3 formations, Sergio would stare at the way Luka’s shorts rode up when he crossed his legs. They were so powerful, so dense. Sergio imagined sinking his teeth into that golden skin, leaving marks that would stay for days. He imagined those legs wrapped around his waist, or better yet, his head trapped between them, the sheer strength of a world-class midfielder crushing him into submission.
He felt ashamed. Luka was his captain, his senior, a man who deserved respect. Yet, Sergio would lie awake at night, clutching his pillow, imagining himself as Luka’s dog—willing to do anything, fetch anything, just for a stroke of that hand through his hair.
The breaking point came after a grueling Champions League away match. They had won, but the flight back was quiet, the team exhausted. Sergio found Luka in the back of the plane, sitting in a darkened row with his eyes closed.
Sergio sat down in the seat next to him. He didn't say a word. He just leaned over and rested his heavy head on Luka’s shoulder.
Luka didn't move. For a long minute, the only sound was the hum of the jet engines. Then, Sergio felt a small, warm hand rest on the back of his neck.
"You’re still at it, aren't you?" Luka whispered, his voice thick with sleep.
"I can't stop," Sergio confessed, his voice trembling. "I know you think I’m just a kid. I know I’m embarrassing. But I’m going crazy, Luka. I’d do anything. I’d be whatever you want."
Luka turned his head, his nose brushing against Sergio’s temple. "You’re so loud, Sergio. Your heart, your feelings... everything about you is so loud. It’s exhausting."
"I’m sorry," Sergio breathed, beginning to pull away, his heart sinking.
But Luka’s hand tightened on his neck, pulling him back. "I didn't say I wanted you to stop."
Sergio’s breath hitched. He looked at Luka, finding the older man watching him with a look that wasn't condescending for the first time. It was predatory. It was hungry.
"You think you can handle me?" Luka asked, his voice a low, dangerous purr. "You think because I’m small, I’m the one who gets taken? You have no idea how much work a puppy like you is going to be."
"Try me," Sergio challenged, his bravado returning tenfold. "Please. Just give me one night. I’ll show you I’m not just a kid."
Luka leaned in, his lips hovering just a fraction of an inch from Sergio’s. "My apartment. Tomorrow night. Don't be late, puppy. I hate waiting."
The following night, Sergio arrived at Luka’s penthouse ten minutes early. He had dressed in his best suit, but his hands were shaking so hard he could barely buzz the intercom. When the door opened, Luka was standing there in a simple silk robe, looking relaxed and devastatingly beautiful.
"You’re early," Luka noted, stepping aside to let him in.
"I couldn't wait," Sergio admitted, his eyes immediately dropping to where the robe parted, revealing those thick, muscular thighs.
Luka noticed the gaze. He didn't cover himself. Instead, he walked toward the large leather sofa in the center of the room and sat down, crossing one leg over the other. "You’ve spent months looking at me like you want to eat me, Sergio. Well? Here I am."
Sergio didn't need a second invitation. He crossed the room in three strides, dropping to his knees between Luka’s legs. He looked up, his large hands hovering over Luka’s knees. "Can I?"
Luka tilted his head back, a smirk playing on his lips. "I told you, didn't I? You’re my dog tonight. Dogs don't ask. They just obey."
Sergio groaned, the sound vibrating in his chest. He surged forward, burying his face in the crook of Luka’s neck, his hands finally, finally gripping those massive thighs. They were even firmer than he had imagined, pure muscle beneath velvet skin. He let out a ragged breath, his teeth grazing the sensitive skin of Luka’s throat.
"So much energy," Luka murmured, his fingers sliding into Sergio’s hair, gripping tight. "Let’s see if you can put it to good use."
Sergio moved with a desperate, youthful hunger. He worshipped those legs, his tongue tracing the lines of muscle, his teeth leaving faint, pale marks that he knew would turn purple by morning. He wanted to mark him, to claim the legend as his own.
When he finally moved up, pinning Luka’s smaller frame against the back of the sofa, he expected to feel a sense of dominance. But as Luka wrapped his legs around Sergio’s waist—the strength in them enough to make Sergio gasp—he realized he was the one being captured.
Luka leaned forward, biting Sergio’s lower lip just hard enough to draw a hiss of air. "You’re strong, Sergio. You’re fast. But you’re unrefined."
"Then teach me," Sergio pleaded, his hands sliding under Luka’s robe to feel the heat of his skin. "I’m yours. Do whatever you want with me."
Luka’s eyes darkened, the playful shimmer replaced by something much more intense. He reached down, grabbing Sergio by the collar of his expensive shirt and yanking him close. "I’m going to run you ragged, puppy. You think ninety minutes on the pitch is hard? You haven't seen anything yet."
As Luka pulled him down into a kiss that tasted of wine and ancient, hidden fires, Sergio knew he was lost. He didn't care about being the star signing or the next big thing in Madrid. In this room, under the weight of Luka’s gaze and the grip of those powerful thighs, he was exactly where he wanted to be.
He was home. And he would spend the rest of the night proving to Luka that while he might be young, he was exactly what the veteran needed to feel young again, too. The puppy had teeth, and he was more than ready to bite.
