The Calculated Risk of a Reckless Heart
The student council office was usually a place of organized chaos, but today it felt like a pressure cooker. The air was thick with the scent of stale coffee and the rhythmic clicking of keyboards. At the head of the long oak table sat JJ Radchapon, the president, his brow furrowed as he navigated a spreadsheet that would have made a lesser man weep.
Opposite him, leaning back with a grace that only a theatre major could possess, was Net Siraphop. Net wasn’t looking at his laptop. He was looking at JJ, a faint, infuriating smirk playing on his lips.
"You missed a decimal point on the budget for the faculty gala, President," Net said, his voice smooth and melodic, cutting through the silence like a well-timed cue.
JJ didn't look up, but his grip on his mouse tightened. "I haven't finished the entry yet, Net. Maybe if you focused on your own report instead of breathing down my neck, we’d be out of here by seven."
"I'm just looking out for the team," Net replied, his tone dripping with a mock-sincerity that made JJ’s teeth ache. "It’s my duty as your loyal Vice President to ensure you don't collapse under the weight of your own ambition."
Across the room, the rest of the council—Keng, Namping, Ohm, Latte, and Kim—shared a collective, weary glance. They had seen this play out a thousand times. To JJ, it was a daily battle of wits and patience. To everyone else, it was the world’s longest, most frustratingly obvious courtship.
"He’s doing it again," Latte whispered to Ohm, nodding toward the pair.
"Net really needs a new hobby," Ohm muttered back. "Or a room. Preferably one with a lock."
JJ finally snapped his laptop shut, the sound echoing in the quiet room. He turned his full attention to Net, his eyes narrowing. "You know, for someone who claims to be so competent, you sure spend a lot of time being a complete nuisance. Honestly, Net, do you ever stop? Is there a version of you that isn't incredibly annoying?"
Net tilted his head, his dark eyes sparkling. "I suppose I could try. But then what would you do with all that pent-up frustration? I’d hate to see you lose your edge, JJ."
JJ scoffed, a reckless idea forming in his mind. He was tired of being the one on the defensive. He wanted to win, just once. He wanted to shut Net up so thoroughly that the other man wouldn't know how to respond.
"Tell you what," JJ said, leaning forward, his voice dripping with a daring confidence. "Since you're so obsessed with me, let’s make a deal. If you can actually admit to being the annoying, insufferable person you are—if you truly insult yourself right now—I’ll make the 'boyfriend claim.' I’ll tell everyone here that we’re dating. Right now."
The room went dead silent. Keng dropped his pen. Namping stopped mid-chew on his snack. It was a bluff, a joke, a trap meant to highlight how much Net valued his own pride. JJ assumed Net would scoff, make a witty retort about his own perfection, and they could go back to their usual bickering.
"I am an arrogant, insufferable, obsessive nuisance who doesn't know when to leave well enough alone," Net said immediately.
The words were out of his mouth before JJ had even finished exhaling. There was no hesitation. No smirk. Just a flat, dead-serious delivery.
JJ blinked, his mouth falling open slightly. "Wait—"
"I’m a selfish, annoying prick who spends way too much time bothering the President because I have nothing better to do," Net repeated, leaning closer, his eyes locked onto JJ’s stunned face. "There. I said it. Twice. Now, pay up, President."
JJ felt the blood rush to his face. The trap had snapped shut, but he was the one caught in it. "I—you... you weren't supposed to actually do it!"
"But I did," Net said, standing up slowly. The playful aura was gone, replaced by a heavy, magnetic presence that filled the space between them. "And you made a promise in front of witnesses."
"It was a joke, Net!" JJ stammered, his heart hammering against his ribs. He looked around at his friends for help, but they were all suddenly very interested in their shoes or their phone screens. "We all know it was a joke."
"Was it?" Net asked, his voice dropping an octave.
JJ couldn't take the sudden shift in atmosphere. The air felt too thin. "I'm going to the storage room to check the banners," he announced abruptly, shoving his chair back and bolting toward the back of the office.
He practically slammed the door of the small, windowless storage room behind him, leaning against a stack of boxes. He needed to breathe. He needed to figure out why his heart was trying to beat its way out of his chest. Net was just being Net. He was just winning the game.
The door opened and closed with a soft click.
JJ jumped, seeing Net standing there in the dim light of the single overhead bulb. The Vice President looked different here, away from the eyes of the council. The "theatre mask" was gone.
"Go away, Net," JJ said, though his voice lacked its usual bite. "The game is over. You won. Ha-ha."
Net didn't move. He took a step forward, forcing JJ to back up until his shoulders hit the cold metal shelving. "I told you, JJ. I’m not playing."
"What are you talking about?" JJ tried to laugh, but it came out as a breathless hitch. "The boyfriend thing? It’s ridiculous. You hate me. You spend every waking hour trying to drive me crazy."
Net reached out, his hand coming to rest on the shelf next to JJ’s head, effectively pinning him. "You’re a smart guy, JJ. You manage the whole council, you handle the budget, you see everything coming. How can you be so blind to this?"
"Blind to what?"
"I don't tease people I hate," Net whispered, his face inches from JJ’s. "I don't spend my energy on people I don't care about. I’ve been trying to get your attention for two years, and you’re so stubborn that the only way you’d look at me was if I annoyed you into it."
JJ’s breath hitched. "Net..."
"You made the claim, JJ. You dared me to give you an opening, and I took it," Net said, his gaze dropping to JJ’s lips. "Stop trying to take it back because you’re scared."
"I'm not scared," JJ lied, his voice trembling.
"Prove it."
Net didn't wait for an answer. He leaned in, closing the final inch of distance. When his lips met JJ’s, it wasn't the tentative, scripted kiss of a stage play. It was a collision—a desperate, hungry claim that had been building behind layers of sarcasm and feigned irritation for years.
JJ gasped into the kiss, his hands instinctively coming up to push Net away, but the moment his fingers brushed the soft fabric of Net’s shirt, his resolve crumbled. He didn't push. He pulled. His fingers curled into the lapels of Net’s blazer, dragging him closer as the shock melted into a sudden, overwhelming heat.
Net groaned low in his throat, a sound of pure, unadulterated want that sent a shiver straight down JJ’s spine. He surged forward, his tongue seeking entrance, and JJ opened for him eagerly. The kiss turned deep and messy, the friction of their lips and the heat of their breath filling the cramped space.
Net’s other hand found the back of JJ’s neck, his fingers tangling in the short hair there, tilting JJ’s head to gain better access. He kissed JJ like he was trying to memorize the taste of him, his movements frantic yet calculated, a perfect blend of passion and precision.
JJ felt lightheaded, his senses overwhelmed by the scent of Net’s expensive cologne and the feeling of Net’s solid body pressed firmly against his. He let out a soft moan as Net’s teeth grazed his lower lip, a sharp spark of pleasure that made his knees buckle. Net caught him, his arm sliding around JJ’s waist to hold him flush against his chest, never breaking the contact of their mouths.
The bickering, the rivalry, the constant need to one-up each other—it all dissolved into this. The friction between them hadn't been animosity; it had been static electricity, waiting for a conductor.
Net pulled back just an inch, his lips swollen and wet, his eyes dark with a raw intensity that JJ had never seen before. "Still a joke, President?" he panted, his forehead resting against JJ’s.
JJ’s chest was heaving, his heart racing a mile a minute. He looked up at Net, really looked at him, seeing the vulnerability hidden behind the intensity. The Vice President wasn't performing. He was exposed.
"You're an idiot," JJ whispered, his voice thick.
Net smiled, a genuine, lopsided grin that reached his eyes. "Your idiot."
"Don't get ahead of yourself," JJ said, though he reached up to trace the line of Net’s jaw. "You still insulted yourself twice. I expect a formal apology later."
Net chuckled, the sound vibrating through JJ’s chest. "I’ll give you whatever you want. As long as you don't take back the claim."
JJ sighed, leaning his head back against the shelves. The thought of walking back out into the office and facing the others was daunting, but the feeling of Net’s hand lingering on his waist made the prospect seem a lot less terrifying.
"I guess I can't," JJ admitted softly. "I'm a man of my word."
Net leaned in again, his voice a soft murmur against JJ’s ear. "Good. Because I have no intention of letting you go."
He kissed JJ again, a slower, deeper exploration that tasted of promises and new beginnings. Outside the door, the muffled sounds of their friends’ laughter echoed through the office, but inside the storage room, the game had finally ended, and something much more real had begun.
JJ realized then that Net hadn't just won the dare. He had won the long game, and for the first time in his life, JJ didn't mind losing at all.
