Measured in Palms

The morning light in Munich filtered softly through the linen curtains of the living room, casting pale golden squares across the hardwood floor. Nini was curled up in the corner of the oversized sofa, her legs tucked beneath her, lost inside an olive-green knit sweater that had long since stretched to twice her size.

A quiet, steady warmth surrounded her, but her attention was entirely captured by the glow of her phone screen. Her dark, springy curls tumbled over her shoulder as she leaned forward, scrolling through social media with an expression that shifted between disbelief and sheer amusement.

A heavy pair of footsteps padded softly down the hallway.

Aleksandar emerged from the kitchen carrying two ceramic mugs, steam curling lazily into the cool morning air. He was wearing gray sweatpants and a plain white t-shirt that stretched broadly across his shoulders and chest. Even barefoot, with sleep still clinging to the edges of his dark eyes, his sheer physical presence seemed to shrink the room. He stood well over six feet tall, broad-shouldered and long-limbed—an imposing silhouette forged through grueling training sessions at Säbener Straße and high-intensity weekends at the Allianz Arena.

He set the mugs down on the low wooden coffee table with a soft clink, immediately leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss to the crown of her head. His lips parted against her curls before he sank into the cushions beside her. The couch groaned slightly under his weight.

"What are you looking at that’s making your forehead wrinkle like that?" he asked, his voice low, raspy, and thick with morning gravel.

Without looking away from the screen, Nini tilted her phone upward toward his face. "You. Or, more specifically, your giant hand."

Aleksandar blinked, rubbing the bridge of his nose before focusing on the display. When his eyes registered the image, a subtle warmth crept up his neck, dusting his cheekbones in pale pink.

It was a paparazzi photo taken two afternoons ago in the Glockenbachviertel. They had just stepped out of a bakery, walking side by side down the cobblestone sidewalk. The photographer had caught them from a low, candid angle. Aleksandar was wearing a tailored black wool coat that accentuated his broad frame, towering over Nini by a good head and a half. But it wasn’t just the stark contrast in their heights that had sent the internet into a collective tailspin.

It was where his hand rested.

He had his right arm slung casually around her waist, pulling her close against his side to shield her from the chilly Bavarian wind. His large, elegant hand—fingers long and splayed—spanned almost the entire width of her waist. His thumb rested near the front of her hip while his fingertips curved all the way around to the small of her back. She looked utterly miniature against him, almost swallowed whole by the sheer scale of his frame.

Below the photo, the comments were a chaotic mix of awe, scandal, and unfiltered curiosity.

"Look at this," Nini said, tapping the screen and reading aloud with a smirk playing at the corners of her lips. "'Someone check on this poor girl, he could literally snap her like a twig.' And here’s another one: 'Her waist is smaller than his forearm, how does she even survive?'"

Aleksandar groaned softly, burying his face in his hands. "Please tell me the boys on the team haven't seen this."

"Are you kidding?" Nini laughed, turning sideways to face him. "Jamal sent it to our group chat twenty minutes ago with three skull emojis. And Thomas commented on the club fan page asking if you were trying to carry me under your arm like a baguette."

A sheepish grin broke across Aleksandar’s face, sheepish and boyishly embarrassed. He dropped his hands and looked at her, his dark eyes softening instantly. "I wasn't trying to make you look small. I was just holding you."

"Alek, you always try to make me look small," she countered gently, her eyes dancing with mischief. "You literally walk around with your arm around me like you're claiming territory."

"I am not!" he protested, though the guilty curl of his smile betrayed him. "You just... you fit there. Am I not supposed to hold my girlfriend?"

"You fit your entire hand across my torso. People in the comments think you're going to accidentally crush me into dust."

Aleksandar reached out, his movements deliberate, unhurried, and extraordinarily cautious. He caught her small, delicate hand in his own. The difference was comical; her slender fingers barely reached past his middle knuckles, her palm completely eclipsed by his broad, calloused skin. He traced the soft curve of her thumb with his own, his touch as light as a whisper, carrying none of the raw power he exerted on the football pitch.

"They're stupid," he murmured, his tone shifting from playful to something quietly earnest. "I’d never hurt you. You know that."

"I know that," she whispered, her smile turning entirely fond.

The public saw Aleksandar Pavlović the midfield enforcer—the towering young talent who didn't shy away from bone-rattling shoulder tackles, who covered miles of grass with relentless stamina, who held off seasoned veterans twice his age with pure physical authority. They saw the sheer size of him, juxtaposed against Nini's petite, five-foot-nothing frame, and imagined a dynamic of overwhelming force.

They didn't see the boy who took off his cleats at the door and tiptoed through the hallway so he wouldn't wake her after an away match. They didn't see the way he constantly checked the pressure of his touch whenever they were close, mindful of every pound of muscle he carried.

"Come here," he said softly, tugging lightly at her hand.

Nini didn't need to be told twice. She uncurled her legs and slid across the sofa into his space.

As soon as she was within reach, Aleksandar pulled her onto his lap. It was a familiar, well-rehearsed dance between them. She tucked her knees against his outer thigh, settling sideways over his lap, while his long arms wound securely around her back. He drew her tight against his chest, his chin coming to rest naturally on the top of her head, right in the soft nest of her brown curls.

He let out a long, contented breath, his chest expanding beneath her cheek.

To anyone watching, it looked like she had vanished entirely into him. His broad shoulders formed a wall behind her; his arms were thick bands that locked out the rest of the world. He completely enveloped her, enclosing her within a fortress of warmth and steady heartbeats.

"See?" Nini mumbled into the cotton of his shirt, her voice slightly muffled. "Completely ridiculous. I don't even have room to exist."

"You have plenty of room," he murmured against her hair, his lips brushing her curls with every word. "You're right where you belong."

He slid one hand down to the small of her back, his palm resting flat against the curve of her waist, mirroring the exact position from the viral photograph. But there was no force in it. His touch was feather-light, rhythmic and soothing, his thumb stroking back and forth over the fabric of her oversized sweater.

"Does it bother you?" he asked after a quiet moment, his voice carrying a rare trace of hesitation. "The stuff people say online? Saying you look frail, or asking how you deal with me?"

Nini shifted slightly, tilting her head back against his shoulder so she could look up at his face. From this angle, his jawline was sharp, his dark eyes searching hers with genuine concern. He was always so careful, so hyper-aware of his own strength, terrified of making her feel diminished or uncomfortable.

She reached up, pressing her small palm flat against his warm cheek. Her fingers barely spanned from his cheekbone to his jaw.

"Not even a little bit," she said firmly. "People on the internet don't know anything. They just see a tall athlete and a short girl and make up weird stories in their heads."

"They talk like I'm a bear who doesn't know his own strength," he grumbled, leaning slightly into the touch of her hand on his cheek.

"Well, you are kind of a bear," she teased, giggling when he narrowed his eyes playfully. "A very big, very cuddly bear. But they don't know how soft you actually are. You won't even roll over in bed without making sure you aren't trapping my legs first."

"Because I weigh almost ninety kilos, Nini," he pointed out, as if stating the most obvious mathematical truth in the world. "If I roll onto you in my sleep, you'll suffocate."

"I wouldn't suffocate! I'd just tap out."

"I am not taking the risk of crushing my girlfriend because I had a dream about defending a set piece," he said solemnly, though the corners of his mouth twitched.

Nini laughed, the sound bright and ringing through the quiet apartment. She loved this about him. She loved that on the pitch, he had the cold, focused composure of an elite professional, but in the sanctuary of their home, he treated her like something rare and infinitely precious. He never crowded her out of dominance; he crowded her out of an instinctive, tender need to keep her close, to keep her safe.

"Besides," Nini added, trailing her fingers down the side of his neck, feeling the steady thrum of his pulse beneath his skin, "I like that you're big."

Aleksandar’s dark brows raised slightly. "Oh, yeah?"

"Yeah. My feet are always cold, and you're like a personal radiator. And when you hug me like this, I don't have to worry about anything. It’s quiet."

His expression softened completely, the lingering tension in his broad shoulders melting away. He tightened his grip just a fraction, pulling her flush against his chest, but keeping his hold gentle, like a cradle rather than a cage.

"I like holding you," he admitted quietly, burying his nose into the crook of her neck. He inhaled deeply, breathing in the familiar scent of vanilla and lavender that always lingered on her skin. "I spend all day running, getting shoved around, fighting for every inch on the pitch. When I come home and you fit right here... it just feels like the world stops spinning for a second."

Nini closed her eyes, resting her forehead against his collarbone. She could feel the heavy, rhythmic thud of his heart against her ear. It was slow and steady, grounding her completely.

Outside these walls, millions of people watched him play every week. Cameras tracked his every move, analysts dissected his passing accuracy, and commentators debated his potential for the national team. And now, strangers on the internet were analyzing the proportions of his hands and the way he towered over her on a casual Tuesday afternoon.

None of it mattered in here. In here, he wasn't the rising midfield star of Bayern Munich. He was just Alek. The boy who made her morning tea, who blushed when his teammates teased him, and who held her with the delicate care of someone holding the most fragile treasure on earth.

"Hey," Aleksandar whispered after a long silence.

"Hmm?"

"Do you want breakfast?"

"Are you going to carry me to the kitchen?" she asked without moving, an amused smile touching her lips.

"I can," he offered easily, already shifting his weight as if preparing to lift her effortlessly with one arm. "You weigh like forty kilos, it's basically a warmup."

"Don't you dare," she warned, though she made no move to get off his lap. "You'll drop me."

"I have never dropped you in my life," he protested, indignation coloring his tone. "My grip strength is elite, thank you very much."

"Your grip strength is currently trending on Twitter, Alek."

Aleksandar let out a low chuckle that rumbled through his broad chest, vibrating against her cheek. He slid his large hand from her waist up to the nape of her neck, his long fingers gently tangling in her brown curls, cradling her head with impossible tenderness.

"Let them talk," he murmured, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to her lips. His mouth was warm, gentle, and utterly devoted. When he pulled back, his dark eyes were bright with a quiet, private happiness. "They don't know how good I have it."

Nini smiled, lifting her arms to wrap them around his broad neck, letting herself sink completely into the shelter of his embrace.

"Neither do they know how good I have it," she whispered back, leaning up to kiss him again.

And as his arms closed securely around her, sealing out the noise of the outside world, she knew she had never been safer in her life.
