The Angle of Deflection

The Säbener Straße training ground was usually a symphony of thudding footballs, sharp whistles, and the aggressive shouting of tactical instructions. But for Jonas Urbig, the noise always seemed to fade into a dull hum the moment Nini stepped onto the pitch with her gimbal and smartphone in hand.

Nini was, in Jonas’s professional opinion, the most distracting element of his workday. She was tiny, often getting lost behind the hulking frames of the center-backs, with a wild halo of brown curls that seemed to have a life of their own. She moved with a quiet, efficient grace, capturing the perfect angles for the club’s Instagram stories without ever wanting to be the center of attention herself.

Jonas, usually the picture of stoic composure and German efficiency, found his focus wavering. As a goalkeeper, his job was to anticipate movement, to read the trajectory of a ball before it was even kicked. But Nini? He couldn't read her at all. She was kind to everyone, offering shy smiles that made his chest feel uncomfortably tight, but she never lingered.

"Focus, Jonas!" the goalkeeping coach barked as a shot whistled past Jonas’s ear, rattling the net.

Jonas shook his head, snapping his gloves together. He glanced toward the touchline. Nini was there, squinting at her screen, biting her lower lip in concentration. He needed a plan. He wasn't the type for flashy gestures or loud proclamations. He was a man of steady hands and calculated risks.

His first attempt at "attraction" was, by all accounts, a disaster of subtlety.

During a mid-week training session, he decided to show off his distribution skills. He spotted Nini standing near the corner flag, chatting with one of the kit men. Jonas caught a cross, took two steps, and launched a perfect, sixty-yard diagonal ball that landed exactly three feet from her toes.

He waited for her to look up, to be impressed by the pinpoint accuracy. Instead, she jumped nearly a foot in the air, clutching her camera to her chest with wide, startled eyes.

"Oh my god," she breathed, her voice small and airy.

Jonas winced, jogging over. "Sorry, Nini! I didn't mean to startle you. I just... the ball was headed that way."

She looked up at him, her head tilted back so far it looked painful. Being six-foot-two meant he towered over her, a fact that usually made him feel powerful, but now just made him feel clumsy.

"It’s okay, Jonas," she said, a faint blush creeping onto her cheeks. "I just wasn't paying attention. Great kick, though."

She gave him a quick, polite nod and scurried away to film the strikers. Jonas stood there, feeling like a giant oaf.

A week later, he tried a different approach. He noticed she always carried a specific brand of oat milk latte from the cafe down the street, usually finishing it before the morning session ended.

The next day, Jonas arrived at the media center twenty minutes early. He left a fresh latte on her desk with a small sticky note that simply said: For the best social media manager in the Bundesliga. - J.U.

He spent the entire morning practice wondering if she’d liked it. When he finally saw her during the lunch break, she was glowing.

"Jonas!" she called out, scurrying over to him in the hallway. She looked like a doll in her oversized Bayern parka. "Thank you so much for the coffee. It was so thoughtful. How did you know?"

"I'm a goalkeeper," he said, trying to sound suave but mostly just sounding breathless. "I notice things. Patterns, you know?"

Nini giggled, a soft, melodic sound that made his stomach do a backflip. "Well, thank you. It really helped. I had a long night editing the 'Behind the Scenes' vlog."

"I could help sometime," he blurted out. "With the content. If you need a player to do a takeover or... a Q&A?"

"Really? You're usually so quiet," she said, her brown eyes searching his. "I didn't want to bother you. The other guys love the camera, but you always seem so focused."

"For you, I can be less focused," he said.

She blinked, her curls bouncing. "What?"

"I mean—less focused on the game, more focused on the... media," he corrected quickly, his ears turning red.

She smiled, that shy, genuine smile that reached her eyes. "I'd like that, Jonas."

Over the next month, Jonas became the most cooperative player on the squad. If Nini needed someone for a TikTok trend, Jonas was there, even if he looked slightly stiff doing a choreographed dance. If she needed a quote for a caption, he gave her thoughtful, long-winded answers.

He started staying late, ostensibly to work on his reflexes in the gym, but really just to wait until she finished her uploads so he could walk her to her car.

One rainy Tuesday evening, the Allianz Arena was bathed in a moody, atmospheric light after a late-night content shoot. The stadium was empty, the silence heavy and peaceful. Nini was packing her gear into her backpack, looking exhausted.

"Let me carry that," Jonas said, reaching for the bag before she could protest.

"Jonas, you don't have to. You've been here for twelve hours," she protested, though she let him take the weight.

"I like the quiet," he said, looking out at the pristine grass. "And I like the company."

They walked through the tunnels in a comfortable silence. Jonas felt the familiar pull in his chest, the urge to say something, to stop being the "helpful player" and start being the man who wanted to take her to dinner.

As they reached the exit, the rain was coming down in sheets. Nini shivered, pulling her jacket tighter around her petite frame.

"Wait here," Jonas said. He stepped out into the rain, popped his umbrella, and held it over her as she stepped out.

Because of the size difference, he had to hold the umbrella high, and she had to stand very close to him to stay dry. He could smell her shampoo—something like vanilla and rain.

"Nini?" he asked, his voice dropping an octave.

She looked up at him, her face framed by damp curls. "Yes?"

"I didn't just give you that coffee because I'm observant," he admitted. His heart was hammering against his ribs harder than it did during a penalty shootout. "And I don't stay late because I love the gym that much."

Nini stayed very still, her breath hitching. "You don't?"

"No," Jonas said, looking down at her. He felt the sudden, sharp need to be honest. "I do it because I wanted to be near you. I’ve had a crush on you since the day you started. Probably since you tripped over that water cooler in your first week and apologized to it."

Nini let out a startled, embarrassed squeak, hiding her face in her hands for a second. "You saw that?"

"I see everything when it comes to you," he said softly. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently pulling her wrists away from her face. "I'm not very good at the small talk or the flirting, Nini. I'm better at guarding things. And I’d really like the chance to... to take care of you. If you’ll let me."

The silence stretched between them, punctuated only by the rhythmic tapping of rain on the umbrella. Nini looked like she was processing a million thoughts at once. Then, she reached out, her small hand grasping the front of his training jacket.

"I thought you were just being German," she whispered, a tiny smile playing on her lips.

"I am German," he joked weakly.

"I mean... I thought you were just being polite," she corrected. "I didn't think someone like you—a professional athlete, so serious and talented—would notice someone like me."

"Nini," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "You're the brightest thing in this entire club."

He leaned down, giving her plenty of time to pull away. He was cautious, waiting for a signal. Nini didn't move back; instead, she stood on her tiptoes, closing the distance.

When their lips finally met, it wasn't like the movies. It was a little awkward because of the height difference, and the umbrella handle bumped Jonas's shoulder, but it was perfect. Her lips were soft and cool from the night air, and she tasted like the peppermint tea she’d been drinking earlier.

Jonas shifted his grip, dropping his hand from her wrist to the small of her back, pulling her flush against him. She felt so tiny in his arms, like he could swallow her whole, but she held onto him with surprising strength.

He pulled back just an inch, his forehead resting against hers.

"So," he breathed, his eyes closed. "Does this mean I don't have to do any more TikTok dances?"

Nini laughed, a bright, clear sound that echoed in the empty corridor. She reached up and tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear, her cheeks flushed a deep rose.

"Maybe just one more," she teased, her eyes shining. "But only if you take me to dinner first."

Jonas grinned, feeling a sense of victory far greater than any clean sheet he’d ever kept. "It’s a deal."
