Switching Numbers

The kitchen smelled of garlic butter, rosemary, and the sweet, rich tang of simmering tomatoes.

Barefoot on the heated tiles of their Munich penthouse, Nini hummed a melody under her breath, hips swaying in time with the rhythm flowing from the counter speaker. Her thick, chocolate curls tumbled freely down her back in loose spirals, catching the warm amber glow of the pendant lights. She wore one of Nathaniel’s oversized training tops—the deep crimson Bayern Munich crest resting halfway down her thigh—and very little else. It swallowed her petite frame in the most delightfully scandalous way.

A heavy key turned in the lock of the front door, followed by the dull thud of a kit bag hitting the entryway floor.

Nini didn’t turn around immediately, but the corner of her lips curved. She knew the cadence of his footsteps before he even crossed the threshold.

"If that smells half as good as it looks from back here," Nathaniel’s deep, velvety voice murmured behind her, "I might just die a happy man right now."

Before she could answer, two strong, sun-kissed arms wrapped securely around her waist, lifting her heels an inch off the floor. Nathaniel buried his face directly into the warm crook of her neck, inhaling deeply with an appreciative groan that vibrated straight through her skin. He still smelled faintly of the cool Bavarian rain and the fresh-cut grass of Säbener Straße, mingled with his signature cedarwood cologne.

"Careful, Nene," she laughed, leaning back against his chest and tilting her head to give him better access. "You’ll make me spill the reduction."

"Let it spill," he mumbled, pressing a lingering, reverent kiss just below her earlobe. "I’ve been running drills for four hours thinking about this exact spot."

Nini turned within the circle of his arms, her wooden spoon balanced precariously over the saucepan. She tilted her chin up to look at him. Nathaniel Brown was breathtaking even when exhausted. His dark eyes held that familiar, lazy warmth reserved exclusively for her, his jawline sharp, his broad shoulders easily dwarfing her small stature.

"Rough day with Vincent?" she asked softly, brushing a stray lock of hair away from his forehead.

"High press all morning. Sprints until my calves burned," he admitted, resting his large hands against her hips, his thumbs lightly hooking into the hem of his jersey. "Every single minute, I kept telling myself: Just get home to Nini. Just get home."

"Well, you’re home." She flashed him a radiant, teasing grin. "And tonight, I’m playing housewife. Pasta from scratch, your favorite wine already breathing, and not a single football clip allowed on the television."

Nathaniel smiled, his gaze dropping to her parted lips, then sweeping down the length of his own shirt draped over her curves.

"Look at you," he whispered, wonder lining his tone. "Cooking like a Michelin chef, running your own business all afternoon, and standing here looking like the most lethal distraction on the planet. How do you do that?"

"Do what?"

"Switch positions so easily," he murmured, pulling her flush against him so she could feel the steady, thumping rhythm of his heart. "One minute you’re the boss handling boardroom calls, the next you’re here making dinner, and now..."

His voice dropped an octave, heavy with unspoken heat.

"Now?" she prompted, her brown eyes flashing with playful defiance.

"Now you’re looking at me like you want to keep me up until dawn, knowing full well I have tactical review at nine tomorrow."

Nini let out a low, breathy laugh, resting her palms flat against his muscular chest.

"Who said anything about sleeping tonight, Brown?"

Nathaniel chuckled, shaking his head as he stepped back just enough to let her turn off the burner.

"You’re dangerous," he muttered. "Certified lethal."

"You love it."

"I do," he confessed without a shred of hesitation. "God help me, I really do."

They ate right there at the kitchen island, side by side on high barstools, knees brushing with every movement. Nathaniel practically inhaled the pasta, showering her with compliments between bites, while Nini sipped her red wine and watched him with affectionate amusement. She loved seeing him like this—stripped of the pressures of the Allianz Arena, free from the weight of expectations, just her boy from Nuremberg who made her heart race with a single glance.

When they finished, Nathaniel immediately reached for the empty plates.

"Leave them," she said, catching his wrist. Her touch was light, but the heat in her fingertips was undeniable.

"Nini, you cooked. The rule is I clean."

"Rules are meant to be renegotiated," she purred, sliding off the stool.

Because she was so petite, standing only brought her eye-level with his chin even while he remained seated. She stepped deliberately between his spread knees, her hands sliding smoothly up his thighs. Nathaniel’s breath hitched, the plates instantly forgotten on the marble counter behind him.

"Is that right?" he asked, his voice suddenly thicker, his hands finding her waist to steady her.

"Absolutely," she whispered, leaning forward until her mouth hovered mere millimeters from his. "I took care of you in the kitchen. Now I think it’s your turn to take care of me."

"Nini..."

"Unless you're too tired from training, of course," she added innocently, her curly hair brushing against his shoulders as she leaned in closer. "I wouldn't want to overwork Bayern's star defender. Maybe you just need eight hours of beauty rest."

Nathaniel let out a sharp, incredulous breath, his dark eyes darkening further. The exhaustion that had weighed on his shoulders ten minutes ago vanished completely, burned away by the spark leaping between them.

"You think you can challenge my stamina?" he asked, a slow, predatory smirk touching his lips.

"I’m just doing the math, Nene," she whispered, trailing one manicured finger down the center of his throat, across his collarbone, down to the top button of his henley. "You gave everything out on the pitch. Do you really have enough left in the tank for thirty-four, thirty-five more rounds?"

Nathaniel stared at her for a beat, the arithmetic clicking in his mind before a wicked grin broke across his face.

"Thirty-four plus thirty-five, huh?" he murmured, leaning down so his mouth brushed her ear. "You want sixty-nine, baby?"

A delicious shiver rippled down Nini’s spine at the sheer confidence in his tone. She tilted her head back, offering him a sultry, knowing smile.

"Show me your work, Brown."

In one swift, fluid movement, Nathaniel stood, lifting her completely off the ground before she could even gasp. Her legs naturally locked around his waist, her small hands clutching his broad shoulders as he carried her effortlessly out of the kitchen.

The living room fell behind them in a blur of shadow and city lights filtering through the floor-to-ceiling glass. Outside, Munich was settling into the quiet chill of late autumn, but inside the master suite, the air was already sweltering.

Nathaniel didn’t drop her onto the mattress; he laid her down with deliberate slowness, following her down until his shadow blanketed her entirely. The contrast between them was intoxicating—her delicate, golden curves against his powerful, athletic build; her softness yielding effortlessly to his solid warmth.

"You talk a lot of game for someone so small," he whispered against her jaw, his lips trailing a searing path down her throat, making her arch her back into his touch.

"I don't need size to handle you," Nini breathed, her fingers tangling into the short, neat fades of his hair, pulling him closer. "I told you, I can switch positions whenever I want."

"Prove it," he challenged softly.

And she did.

With a sudden burst of energy, Nini rolled them over, surprising him as she pinned his shoulders against the silk sheets, straddling his waist. Her curls spilled around them like a dark halo, framing her breathtaking face. She looked down at him with an expression that made Nathaniel’s throat go completely dry—commanding, gorgeous, and entirely his.

"First position," she murmured, leaning down to capture his mouth in a kiss that was neither hurried nor gentle.

It was deep, demanding, and electric. Nathaniel groaned into the kiss, his large hands gripping her waist, feeling every dip and curve of her body. He had faced the best attackers in Europe, stood before crowds of seventy-five thousand screaming fans without blinking, but nothing rattled his composure quite like the taste of her lips.

When she pulled back, both of them were breathing raggedly. Nathaniel’s eyes were wild, dilated with pure adoration and desire.

"You're unbelievable," he rasped, lifting his hips slightly to remind her of the effect she had on him.

"Tell me what you want, Nene," she whispered, leaning down so her breasts pressed against his chest through the thin fabric of his jersey. "Tell me, and I'll give it to you."

"I want you," he said, the teasing tone dropping entirely, replaced by raw, unvarnished devotion. "Every way. All night. I don't care if I don't sleep a second."

Nini’s smile softened into something infinitely tender, even as her hands reached for the hem of the shirt she was wearing, pulling it up and over her head in one smooth gesture, tossing it heedlessly across the room.

The sight of her took what little breath Nathaniel had left. She was perfection sculpted in skin and bone, radiant under the dim bedside lamp.

"Then don't let me down," she teased, though her voice trembled slightly with anticipation.

Nathaniel didn't wait. He pulled her down into another searing kiss, their bodies moving together in an instinctive, desperate dance that they had perfected over months of stolen evenings and quiet mornings. The playfulness melted into searing heat. Every touch was an unspoken promise, every breathless gasp an echo of the lyrics she had been humming earlier in the evening.

He worshiped her with a patience that belied his profession's aggressive nature. He learned every inch of her skin again as if for the first time, murmuring praises against her stomach, her thighs, the soft curve of her hips. When she whimpered his name, burying her face into his shoulder, he held her tighter, matching her rhythm, refusing to let her drift away.

They moved together, shifting and adapting, finding new angles, new depths of intimacy that left them both clinging to one another like lifelines. True to his word, Nathaniel's stamina never wavered; true to hers, Nini pushed him to his absolute limits, matching his passion until the world outside the bedroom ceased to exist.

Hours melted into the soft, quiet hum of the night.

By the time the storm finally settled, the digital clock on the nightstand read 3:45 AM.

The bedroom was silent save for the synchronized sound of their deep, heavy breaths. The silk sheets were a tangled wreck at the foot of the bed.

Nini lay curled against Nathaniel’s side, her head resting securely on his bare, sweat-damp chest. Her petite body felt delightfully heavy, utterly exhausted in the most delicious way possible. Nathaniel’s left arm was draped around her, his fingers absentmindedly twirling one of her damp brown curls, his chest rising and falling beneath her cheek.

"Hey," he whispered into the stillness, his voice rough and satisfied.

"Hmm?" she hummed, barely opening her eyes.

"What's thirty-four plus thirty-five again?"

Nini couldn't help the quiet laugh that bubbled up in her chest. She lifted her head just enough to glare at him playfully through the dark curls falling over her face.

"You're impossible."

"I’m just checking your math, baby," he grinned, kissing the tip of her nose. "You said you wanted to keep score."

"I think the score was settled about an hour ago," she sighed, snuggling deeper into the crook of his arm, throwing one slender leg over his. "You're going to be a zombie at tactical review."

"Worth it," Nathaniel said instantly, pressing a firm kiss to the crown of her head. "Kompany can make me run until my lungs burst tomorrow. I don't care. I won tonight."

"You won?" Nini scoffed softly, tracing small circles over his ribs. "Pretty sure I was the one running the game."

"You always run the game, Nini. On the pitch, off the pitch... you're the only one who can make me change direction like that."

She went still for a moment, touched by the quiet sincerity in his voice. She looked up, finding his dark gaze fixed on her with a tenderness that made her chest ache in the best way.

"I love you, Nene," she whispered.

"I love you more," he replied, pulling the duvet up over their shoulders to shield them from the cool night air. "Now go to sleep before you decide to switch positions on me again. I might actually need ten minutes of rest."

Nini smiled against his skin, closing her eyes as his steady heartbeat lulled her into tranquility.

"Ten minutes," she agreed softly, her breath warm against his collarbone. "Then we'll see."

Nathaniel chuckled, tightening his hold on her as sleep finally claimed them both, wrapped tightly together in the quiet heart of Munich.
