The Chemistry of Choice

The low hum of the television did little to drown out the rush of blood in JJ’s ears.

Curled on the corner of the plush charcoal sofa in Net’s high-rise living room, he pulled his knees tighter to his chest, trying to ignore the prickling heat clawing beneath his ribs. It was their usual Friday ritual. Two years of playing lovers on screen as one of the industry’s most bankable fixed pairings had blurred into an intensely comfortable domestic routine behind closed doors. They rehearsed lines, ate late-night takeout, and existed together in quiet, safe companionship.

Safe, because JJ was a Beta. There were no unpredictable cycles, no feral alpha possessiveness, and no risk of crossing the firm lines they had set to preserve their sanity.

Except, for the past four months, JJ’s heart had stopped obeying those boundaries. He had fallen in love with Net—silently, agonizingly—convinced that voicing it would obliterate the only safe harbor he possessed. Net was a powerhouse: an elite Alpha, a shrewd businessman, and an actor whose presence commanded every room. JJ was just the steady partner who kept him grounded.

JJ shifted uncomfortably, a sudden dizzy spell turning the room sideways. A thick, feverish slickness gathered between his thighs, accompanied by a hollow, aching throb in his lower abdomen that made his breath hitch.

Beside him, Net froze.

The Alpha didn’t move an inch at first, but the heavy, measured stillness in the air tightened. Net’s sharp profile slowly turned away from the screen, his dark eyes narrowing as his nostrils flared slightly.

"JJ," Net’s voice was dangerously low, smooth as velvet yet vibrating with a sudden, razor-sharp edge. "What did you put on?"

"Nothing," JJ whispered, his throat raw. He swallowed, pressing his palms against the cool fabric of his sweatpants. "Just... my usual body wash. Net, I don't feel good. I think I caught that flu going around the studio."

Net didn't answer right away. He leaned in slowly, giving JJ ample space, until his nose hovered just inches from the crook of JJ’s neck. A shiver tore through JJ’s spine at the proximity. Net inhaled deeply, and his pupils dilated until the dark irises almost swallowed the whites of his eyes.

"That isn't a flu," Net said softly, his voice dropping into a register that made JJ’s entire pelvis clench involuntarily. "It smells like crushed peaches and spun sugar. JJ... your scent gland is burning."

"Don't be ridiculous," JJ rasped, a surge of blind panic piercing through the intoxicating fog in his head. "I'm a Beta. I’ve been a Beta my whole life. I had my presentation test at sixteen—"

"Look at me." Net reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping JJ’s jaw. He didn't force JJ to turn, merely offering the touch, anchoring him. "Your skin is on fire. You're slicking your clothes, baby. You're presenting."

The word struck like physical impact. Presenting. An Omega.

"No," JJ choked out, his vision blurring as hot tears spilled over his eyelashes. The terror wasn't just about his changing biology; it was the sheer, terrifying ruin of their dynamic. "No, Net, please. Not this. I can't be. If I'm an Omega, we can't... we can't just be us anymore. It ruins everything."

"Hey," Net murmured, shifting onto his knees on the rug so he was looking up at JJ, entirely unthreatening despite the dark, smoky cedar of his alpha pheromones suddenly blooming through the room to soothe the rising hysteria. "Breathe. Look at my eyes. Nothing is ruined. I am right here."

"I hurt," JJ sobbed, arching his back as a vicious cramp rippled through his womb, his body screaming for friction, for weight, for an Alpha. "Net, it hurts so bad."

"I know, sweetheart. A first heat is brutal," Net said gently, brushing the damp fringe from JJ’s forehead. He kept his hands open, visible. "Listen to me clearly. You have full control. I have suppressants in the guest cabinet, or I can call a private medical team. Or... I can help you through it myself. But only if you tell me that's what you want. I won't touch you unless you ask."

JJ looked at Net’s composed face—the tight jaw that betrayed how hard Net was fighting his own alpha instincts, the fierce protectiveness burning in his gaze. JJ didn't want suppressants. He didn't want doctors. For months, he had starved for Net’s touch, hiding behind the sterile shield of professional camaraderie.

"Don't call anyone," JJ begged, his fingers tangling desperately in the fabric of Net’s black shirt, pulling him close. "Please. Net, touch me. Please, I want you."

"Are you sure, JJ?" Net pressed, his voice strained, leaning in until their lips nearly brushed. "No regrets when the fever breaks?"

"Please," JJ whimpered, pressing his mouth against Net’s in a clumsy, desperate plea. "I'm sure. Take me to bed."

The restraint snapped, not with violence, but with a terrifying, absolute focus. Net scooped JJ into his arms effortlessly, carrying him into the master bedroom. The mattress dipped beneath them, and within moments, the barrier of clothing was gone.

The sweet, rich scent of an unbred Omega filled the room, sending Net’s cedar-scented aura crashing over them like a tidal wave. When Net parted JJ’s trembling thighs, JJ cried out at the cold air meeting his feverish, soaking-wet heat.

"Look at you," Net praised in a dark, reverent whisper, pressing his thumbs against the crease of JJ’s hips. "So beautiful. So wet for me, JJ."

Net didn't rush. He used his fingers first, slicking two, then three digits into JJ’s tight, dripping passage. JJ threw his head back, gasping, heels digging into the sheets as Net found the swollen, sensitive bundle of nerves inside him with ruthless accuracy.

"Net—ah! Net, please, it's too much—"

"Not yet, love. You need to stretch," Net whispered, kissing down the line of JJ’s throat, lapping up the salty tears on his cheeks. "Relax for me."

When Net finally positioned the broad head of his cock at JJ’s entrance, JJ’s hips bucked upward in instinctual demand. Net pushed in slowly, inch by agonizing inch, groaning deeply as JJ’s burning walls clamped around him like a velvet vice. JJ’s nails tore into Net’s broad shoulders, his breath hitching on a broken scream of mingled pain and unimaginable relief.

"You're taking all of me," Net murmured, his forehead resting against JJ’s as he began to move.

The rhythm started steady and agonizingly deep, but the heat quickly devoured any semblance of moderation. JJ was completely untethered. Every thrust sent electric shocks straight to his brain, the friction of Net’s skin against his igniting nerve endings he hadn't known existed. His body milked Net greedily, his hips rising to meet every bruising pound.

"Net! Net, I can't—I'm going to—"

"Come for me, JJ. Let it go."

JJ shattered with a high, keening wail, his release painting their stomachs, his internal walls clenching so violently that Net let out a guttural curse. The base of Net’s cock swelled rapidly, the thick bulb of his knot catching against JJ’s tight rim.

"Net? Wait, what is—" JJ panicked, feeling the sudden, overwhelming stretching sensation.

"Shh, stay still, sweetheart. Let me knot you," Net groaned, holding JJ’s hips down firmly as he gave one final, driving shove. The knot popped through, locking them together in an inescapable, intimate seal.

JJ gasped, his chest heaving, his senses drowned in the violent pleasure of being completely filled and claimed. For twenty minutes, they stayed locked together as Net pulsed his seed deep inside him, murmuring endless praise into JJ’s ear until the swelling subsided.

Yet the heat refused to die.

Over the course of the night, it seized JJ in wave after unrelenting wave. By the second round, JJ was whimpering from pure overstimulation, his skin flushed crimson, tears leaking continuously from his eyes. Every light brush of Net’s lips made him arch; every thrust pushed him past the brink of exhaustion into sheer sensory overload. Net turned him onto his hands and knees, pulling him flush against his chest to support JJ’s trembling weight, driving into him with a relentless, protective cadence until his knot locked inside JJ once more.

By the third time Net knotted him, near the early hours of dawn, JJ could barely form words. He could only cling to Net’s arms, trembling uncontrollably, completely undone, whispering Net’s name like a prayer against the Alpha’s sweat-sheened collarbone before exhaustion finally dragged him under.

Clarity returned with the harsh morning light filtering through the blinds.

JJ’s eyes fluttered open. The heavy, feverish fog had completely receded, leaving behind an intense, deep ache in his hips and a profound, hollow sense of dread. The bed beside him was cold and empty.

He sat up, his entire body trembling. The sheets were thoroughly wrecked, carrying the undeniable, mingled scent of Alpha and Omega, rut-like musk and spent sweet slick.

What did I do?

The realization hit him like a freight train. He had used Net. He had let his instincts shatter the fragile, beautiful boundary of their friendship. Net had only helped him out of duty, out of pity for an Omega in distress. The contract, the safe closeness, the trust—he had blown it all to pieces.

Panic clawed at his throat. He had to leave. If he stayed, if he faced Net over breakfast, the humiliation would kill him. He had to pack up the remnants of his dignity, go back to his own apartment, and pretend this was just a biological mishap they could overlook.

Scrambling out of bed on shaking legs, JJ grabbed his discarded sweatpants and oversized hoodie from the floor, tugging them on with trembling fingers. He didn't even look for his shoes. Moving silently, hyperventilating in sheer terror, he made a beeline down the long hallway toward the front door.

He reached the foyer, eyes fixed on the digital lock, his heart hammering against his ribs. He was so consumed by his frantic urge to escape that he didn't hear the soft click of the lock from the outside, nor did he register the tall figure stepping across the threshold.

JJ slammed directly into a wall of solid, broad muscle.

"Whoa—careful."

Firm hands instantly shot out, gripping JJ’s upper arms to steady him. JJ gasped, stumbling backward, his head snapping up to meet Net’s calm, dark gaze. Net was dressed in a clean black turtleneck and trousers, holding a brown paper bag from the bakery downstairs, his hair slightly damp.

"Where's the fire?" Net asked, his tone easy, though his eyes carefully cataloged JJ’s disheveled state, the pallor of his skin, and the wild panic in his eyes.

"I—I'm sorry," JJ stammered, his voice breaking. He tried to pull back, but Net didn't release his grip, keeping his hold gentle but unyielding. "I'm sorry, Net. I didn't mean to—I should go. I need to get an Uber."

"JJ. Breathe." Net stepped fully into the foyer, kicking the heavy wooden door shut behind him. He set the bakery bag down on the console table without looking away. "Why are you running? And why on earth are you apologizing to me?"

"Because I ruined it!" The dam broke, and the words tumbled out of JJ in a desperate, ragged rush, tears immediately blinding him. "I ruined everything we built! We had an agreement, Net. We were safe. We were partners and friends, and I went and presented like a freak, and I begged you to sleep with me! I used you to get through it, and now our friendship is dead, and the pairing is going to fall apart, and—"

"JJ—"

"No, let me finish, please, because if I don't say it now, I'll never be able to look at you again," JJ cried, his hands bunching into fists against his chest. "I've been in love with you for months! Ever since the fanmeet in Chiang Mai, I’ve been suffocating on it! I kept my mouth shut because I knew you were an Alpha and I was just a Beta, and I was replaceable, and you were my best friend. And now I dragged you into bed, and it was just instincts for you, just helping out a sick coworker, and I can't bear to watch you pretend it didn't happen out of politeness!"

JJ’s chest heaved, his throat aching, completely laid bare. He squeezed his eyes shut, bracing for the awkward silence, the polite rejection, the death knell of their two-year bond.

Instead, a soft touch brushed his jaw.

Before JJ could process it, Net leaned down and pressed a firm, sweet peck right onto his trembling lips.

It was brief—barely a second—but it stopped JJ’s frantic breathing dead in its tracks.

JJ’s eyes flew wide open, his mouth parted in total, utterly bewildered shock. He stared at Net like the Alpha had grown a second head, his brain completely short-circuiting.

Net pulled back just an inch, his lips curving into a slow, intensely amused smirk. The crinkles by the corners of his eyes deepened, a warmth spreading across his face that JJ had never seen directed at anyone else in the world.

"Are you done catastrophizing?" Net asked smoothly, his thumb sweeping across JJ’s cheek to catch a stray tear.

"You... you just kissed me," JJ squeaked, dumbfounded.

"I did." Net’s voice dropped, rich and steady. "And for the record, you are the most emotionally brilliant songwriter I know, but you are a terrible detective."

JJ blinked rapidly, his mind struggling to catch up. "What?"

"You think I didn't notice?" Net stepped closer, cornering JJ against the console table with deliberate, calm intent, his cedar scent wrapping around them like a secure fortress. "JJ, I manage three production companies and an acting career. You think I couldn't tell that my fixed partner was looking at me like he wanted to kiss me every time we finished a scene?"

JJ felt his face flush violently. "You knew?"

"I suspected. And I was waiting," Net said quietly, the humor fading into something intensely earnest. "I didn't stay your friend because of a contract, JJ. I stayed because I wanted you in my life, and I refused to scare you off before you were ready. Do you honestly believe I knot people out of professional courtesy?"

JJ opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

"I locked myself into you three times last night because I’ve spent two years wanting you," Net admitted, resting his forehead against JJ’s, his breath warm against JJ’s lips. "Your late presentation wasn't an accident, baby. The clinic results I checked this morning confirmed it—prolonged proximity to a compatible Alpha's pheromones can trigger latent secondary presentations. You presented because your body felt safe enough with me to do it."

JJ’s breath hitched, his heart swelling to the point of bursting. "Net..."

"I am not going to pretend last night didn't happen," Net murmured, his fingers threading through JJ’s soft hair. "And I am not letting you run away in your socks. But I will give you a choice, because I promised you that you'd always have control."

Net straightened slightly, offering JJ that steady, measuring gaze that was entirely stripped of coldness.

"Option one: we set strict boundaries, we tell the agency you presented as an Omega, we get you medical suppressants, and we remain best friends and partners. Exactly like before." Net paused, his eyes softening impossibly. "Option two: you take off that hoodie, you eat the breakfast I bought, and you become my boyfriend for real. No fanservice. No contracts. Just you and me."

The silence in the foyer was deafening, but for the first time in months, the terror in JJ’s chest was entirely gone. The knot in his stomach untangled, replaced by a radiant, blooming warmth that had nothing to do with fever and everything to do with the man standing before him.

JJ let out a shaky, wet laugh, wiping his face with the back of his sleeve.

"You bought breakfast?" JJ whispered.

"I did," Net smiled, his gaze locking onto JJ’s lips with undisguised affection. "Croissants and that strawberry milk you like."

JJ reached out, wrapping his arms securely around Net’s waist and burying his face into the soft wool of Net’s sweater, breathing in the scent of cedar, coffee, and home.

"Then I'm taking option two," JJ murmured against his chest. "I want to be your boyfriend, Net."

Net let out a low, relieved exhale, his arms tightening around JJ until there was no space left between them. He leaned down, claiming JJ’s mouth once more—not with a quick peck, but with a deep, deliberate kiss that sealed the promise they had finally chosen to make.
