Ripples Beneath the Surface
The gravel courtyard of the Ubuyashiki estate was bathed in crisp morning light, the scent of blooming wisteria drifting on a gentle breeze. Seven of the demon slayers knelt in rigid formation, their multicolored haori stark against the white stones. A meeting of the Hashira was always a solemn affair, but today, an unusual electric tension hummed in the air.
For months, whispers had circulated through the ranks about the enigmatic Water Hashira. Missions in the north and east had been resolved with fluid, terrifying efficiency, yet the slayer responsible had remained completely aloof, avoiding the headquarters whenever possible.
The shoji screen slid open smoothly, and Kagaya Ubuyashiki stepped onto the wooden engawa, guided gently by his daughters. Immediately, the gathered warriors bowed low, their foreheads nearly touching the dirt.
"Good morning, my children," Kagaya said, his voice as soothing as warm honey. "The weather is exceptionally clear today. It warms my heart to see all of you in good health."
"We are honored by your presence, Master!" Kyojuro Rengoku barked with characteristic passion, his golden eyes bright. "We pray for your continued happiness and strength!"
"Thank you, Kyojuro," the master replied with a soft smile. "Today, our circle becomes whole once more. For a long time, the Water Hashira has operated in seclusion, undertaking solitary assignments of great importance. But the shadows lengthen, and the time has come for her to stand beside her brethren."
Sanemi Shinazugawa raised his scarred face, his brow furrowing. "Her?"
Before anyone could voice another question, the courtyard gate clicked open.
Footsteps approached—light, almost weightless, barely disturbing the pebbles. Beside those delicate steps came another, firmer stride.
The Hashira shifted slightly, glancing back toward the path. The moment their eyes fell upon the newcomer, the collective breath of the courtyard seemed to vanish into thin air.
Walking alongside a young man with messy peach hair was a woman of astonishing, ethereal beauty.
Her dark bluish-black hair fell in a silken, uneven ponytail, loose strands framing a face of sheer porcelain perfection. Her skin was as clear and pale as freshly fallen snow, making the striking, vivid blue of her eyes look like deep, uncharted ocean trenches. Her slender frame was draped in a half-and-half haori—one side plain burgundy, the other a geometric pattern of green, yellow, and orange. Every movement she made was marked by an agonizingly shy grace, her shoulders slightly drawn inward.
Upon her lips rested a soft, gentle smile. It was lovely, perfectly polite, and entirely practiced—just convincing enough to appear genuine to the casual observer, yet masking an unfathomable reservoir of quiet solitude.
Tengen Uzui’s sharp eyes widened, his usual flamboyant smirk freezing mid-expression. His heart gave an uncharacteristic, thunderous thud against his ribs. What in the world...? That’s... flamboyant doesn't even begin to cover it.
Sanemi choked on his own spit, his scowl crumbling into a stunned, crimson-cheeked gape. He hastily jerked his head away, teeth grinding, yet his eyes immediately betrayed him, darting back to the slender curve of her neck.
Beside him, Obanai Iguro stiffened. Kaburamaru, coiled around his neck, flicked his tongue nervously, sensing his master’s suddenly erratic pulse. Obanai’s heterochromatic eyes tracked her every step, his chest tightening beneath his bandages.
Mitsuri Kanroji pressed both hands against her burning cheeks, squealing soundlessly. She’s so gorgeous! Like a water spirit! Oh, my heart won’t stop pounding!
Muichiro Tokito, who had been staring absently at a passing sparrow, blinked slowly, his mint-green eyes fixating on her face with sudden, unblinking intensity. Even Gyomei Himejima, blind to the physical world, let out a slow, trembling breath, hands clasped around his prayer beads as he felt the remarkably serene, cool, and delicate aura drifting into the courtyard.
Beside the stunning swordswoman, the young man with peach hair and striking lavender eyes noticed the shift instantly.
Sabito’s eyes narrowed into slits. A deep, territorial heat flared in his chest as he took in the way every single Hashira was practically drooling over her. He took half a step forward, his shoulder deliberately brushing against hers, positioning himself slightly ahead as an unspoken shield.
"Master," Sabito said, bowing respectfully with one hand resting casually on the hilt of his Nichirin blade. "I have escorted her as requested."
Giyuu Tomioka stopped, her ocean-blue eyes lowering politely. She knelt down beside Sabito, bowing low to the ground with fluid poise.
"I apologize for my late arrival, Oyakata-sama," Giyuu murmured.
Her voice was soft and melodic, like cool water running over smooth river stones. It sent a collective shiver down the spines of the surrounding pillars.
"There is no need to apologize, Giyuu," Kagaya said warmly. "You have labored tirelessly in the northern mountains. Please, introduce yourself to your fellow Hashira."
Giyuu rose back to her knees, keeping her gaze modestly lowered before casting a quiet glance across the group. That small, enigmatic smile never left her face, though her fingers secretly curled into the fabric of her uniform pants, betraying her profound shyness.
"I am Giyuu Tomioka," she said softly, her pale cheeks tinting with a faint, lovely shade of pink. "The Water Hashira. I hope... to serve well alongside you all."
Rengoku was the first to snap out of the trance, his booming voice cutting through the courtyard, though his face carried a suspicious dusting of red.
"It is a tremendous pleasure to finally meet you, Tomioka! Your reputation as a master of the Water Breathing precedes you! I am Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira!"
Giyuu’s ocean eyes widened slightly at his volume, and she gave a quiet, timid nod. "Thank you, Rengoku-san."
Sabito’s jaw clenched. He hated the way Rengoku’s golden eyes burned with obvious fascination. He hated the way Sanemi was failing miserably at looking anywhere else. He hated the predatory appraisal in Tengen’s silver gaze.
Instinctively, Sabito shifted closer, his knee brushing against Giyuu’s thigh on the gravel.
Giyuu felt the contact, and beneath her calm, smiling exterior, her breath hitched. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs, completely unprompted by the intimidating gaze of the Hashira, but entirely caused by the boy next to her. She had loved Sabito in secret for years—since the mountain, since the training, since every day they bled and survived together. Having him so close, his familiar pine-and-rain scent wrapping around her, always made her dizzy.
The meeting proceeded, Kagaya outlining recent demon movements and strategic deployments. Yet throughout the entire strategic discussion, the focus of the Hashira was irrevocably compromised.
Whenever Giyuu spoke—offering brief, quiet, highly insightful observations on demon behavior—every single ear strained to catch every syllable. Shinobu Kocho watched her with sharp, violet eyes, a subtle flush on her own cheeks as she admired the breathtaking grace with which the Water Hashira carried herself.
When Kagaya finally dismissed them, offering his blessings before retreating inside, the courtyard erupted into a tense, chaotic energy.
Before Giyuu could even stand up properly, Tengen was already towering nearby, a wide, dazzling grin on his face.
"Well, well, I have to admit, Tomioka, you’re an absolute vision," Tengen drawled, leaning down slightly, his voice dropping into a smooth, charismatic timbre. "Operating in secret is pretty un-flamboyant, but your appearance makes up for it ten times over. How about I show you around the estate grounds? You must be unfamiliar with the territory."
Giyuu shrank back just an inch, startled by his sheer size and bold approach. "Ah... I..."
Before she could finish, a rough voice barked out from the side.
"Back off, Uzui!" Sanemi snarled, marching over with his arms crossed, veins pulsing on his forehead, his face entirely red. "Don't go overwhelming her the second she gets here! You got zero tact!"
He turned his fierce gaze toward Giyuu, his expression softening by an almost comical degree, though he tried desperately to maintain his scowl.
"If... if you need someone to spar with to adjust to the headquarters' training grounds, I'm available," Sanemi grumbled awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck and refusing to meet her eyes directly. "I won't go easy on you just 'cause you're small, but... you know. Whatever."
"How wonderfully kind of you, Shinazugawa," Obanai hissed coldly from the low branch of an overhanging maple tree, glaring down with venomous jealousy. "Though I doubt she requires the assistance of someone who communicates solely through screaming. Tomioka, the garden paths are far more peaceful. I would be willing to accompany you."
Mitsuri scrambled forward, practically bouncing on her heels. "Tomioka-chan! Would you like to have tea with me? I brought cherry blossom mochi! It’s wonderfully sweet!"
Giyuu stood frozen, completely overwhelmed by the sudden barrage of attention. She wasn't used to crowds. She wasn't used to people talking to her, let alone looking at her with such heated, intense expressions. Her smile remained firmly in place, but her fingers trembled slightly at her sides.
"I... that is very kind of you all..." she began, her quiet voice almost drowning under their collective clamor.
Suddenly, a firm, warm hand gripped Giyuu’s wrist.
Sabito stepped directly between Giyuu and the assembled pillars, his lavender eyes flashing with unmistakable irritation. His peach hair swayed as he pulled her slightly behind his broad shoulders, effectively cutting off their view of her delicate face.
"That's enough," Sabito said, his tone icy and sharp as a honed blade.
The Hashira bristled. Sanemi glared daggers at him. "Who the hell are you to get in the middle of this, brat? You're just a kinoe."
"I am her partner," Sabito retorted smoothly, not backing down an inch, his voice dripping with authority. "And unlike you all, I actually pay attention. She’s been traveling on foot for three days straight without proper rest. She doesn't need a tour, she doesn't need a spar, and she certainly doesn't need you barking in her ear."
Tengen arched a brow, crossing his massive arms over his chest. "Oho? Protective, aren't we? Are you her guard dog, boy?"
Sabito’s eyes narrowed into slits of dangerous amethyst. "Call it whatever you like. We’re leaving."
Without waiting for a response, Sabito tugged gently on Giyuu’s wrist, pulling her along the gravel path away from the courtyard.
"Wait, Tomioka!" Rengoku called out, taking a step forward, but Sabito didn't slow down, and Giyuu simply cast a shy, apologetic look over her shoulder, bowing her head slightly before disappearing behind the corner of the wooden corridor.
Left behind in the courtyard, the Hashira stood in heavy, suffocating silence.
Sanemi clicked his tongue aggressively, his heart still hammering an absurd rhythm against his chest. "Damn peach-haired bastard..."
"He’s very close to her," Shinobu observed, her finger tapping thoughtfully against the hilt of her sword, her violet eyes gleaming with an uncharacteristic edge of jealousy. "A bit too close, wouldn't you say?"
"He has no right to hoard her presence like that," Obanai muttered darkly from the tree, Kaburamaru hissing in total agreement. "Completely arrogant."
"Still..." Tengen sighed, running a hand through his white hair with a low chuckle. "Did you see those eyes? She’s a masterpiece. An absolute masterpiece."
"So cute..." Mitsuri whimpered, clutching her chest. "I want to be her best friend... or hold her hand... oh, goodness!"
Meanwhile, far down the secluded garden corridor, surrounded by towering bamboo stalks that rustled softly in the wind, Sabito finally stopped walking.
He didn't let go of her hand, though. In fact, his grip slipped down from her wrist until his calloused fingers intertwined securely with hers.
Giyuu felt the heat radiating from his palm and swallowed hard, her heart practically leaping into her throat. She looked up at him, her ocean-blue eyes wide and questioning.
"Sabito?" she whispered softly.
Sabito turned to face her. His expression was a storm of frustration, worry, and something deeply, fiercely possessive. He reached out with his free hand, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her pale cheek, letting his knuckles linger against her soft skin.
Giyuu’s breath caught. The practiced, artificial smile she had worn all morning finally cracked, melting into an authentic, flustered expression of pure innocence.
"Those idiots," Sabito muttered under his breath, his lavender eyes scanning her face hungrily. "The way they were looking at you... like wolves."
"They were just being polite, weren't they?" Giyuu asked timidly, her voice barely louder than a breeze through the bamboo. "I thought... I was worried they would hate me for being absent so long."
"Polite?" Sabito let out a dry, incredulous scoff. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until Giyuu was lightly pressed against the smooth wooden railing of the engawa. "Giyuu, you are utterly blind."
"Blind?" she blinked, her heart pounding so loudly she was terrified he might hear it.
"They weren't being polite," Sabito murmured, his voice dropping into a low, husky register that made Giyuu’s knees feel weak. He leaned in, his face mere inches from hers, his lavender eyes burning into her sapphire depths. "They looked at you the way everyone does when they finally see you. Like they want to steal you away."
Giyuu’s cheeks flushed a brilliant, burning crimson. "Sabito..."
"I won't let them," he whispered fiercely, his hand moving to gently cup the side of her neck, his thumb tracing the delicate line of her jaw. "You’re my partner, Giyuu. You belong by my side. Don't look at them. Don't smile at them like you did back there."
He paused, his voice softening into something raw and vulnerable.
"Only smile like that for me."
Giyuu’s chest tightened with a sweet, agonizing ache. She had kept her feelings buried so deep, terrified that revealing them would ruin the bond they had forged through blood and survival. But feeling the heat of his body, hearing the possessive tremor in his voice, she couldn't hide her true self anymore.
Slowly, timidly, Giyuu leaned her cheek into the palm of his hand, letting her ocean eyes soften into an expression of sheer, unmasked affection. A genuine smile—radiant, breathtaking, and entirely real—bloomed across her face just for him.
"I won't," she promised softly, her voice trembling with the weight of her secret love. "Only for you, Sabito."
Sabito’s breath hitched, his purple eyes widening before darkening with intense devotion. His grip on her waist tightened, pulling her closer into his embrace, silently swearing to himself that no matter how many Hashira fell at her feet, none of them would ever take her away.
